Congratulations to Barbara Sukowa

LOLA for the best actress in a leading role

At the sixty-third presentation of the German Film Awards held at Berlin’s Friedrichstadtpalast, Barbara Sukowa received the Best Actress award for her performance in Margarethe von Trotta’s HANNAH ARENDT.

It is the third time that Sukowa has been awarded the “Golden Film Strip” (Filmband in Gold), as the lucrative prize used to be known. Since 1999, the statuette awarded to the winners has been known as the LOLA, a reference to Marlene Dietrich’s role as Lola in THE BLUE ANGEL, the film by Rainer Werner Fassbinder starring Barbara Sukowa in the eponymous title role, and Tom Tykwer’s hit film RUN LOLA RUN.

In her acceptance speech, Sukowa made a charmingly discrete reference to this appellative connection and the additional personal significance that the award thus had for her …

The RWFF congratulates Lola on her LOLA and Margarethe von Trotta on her silver LOLA for Best Film!
